Auditions

We’re looking for one or two new members!

Voices is made up of amateurs with purpose, singing with, as, and for communities working for justice, self-determination, joy and freedom. We are looking for one or two new members. Voices is a QPOC-led singing group, and we are especially welcoming people of color to audition, and especially those with lower voices.

Why join Voices?

  • It’s fun to sing together!
  • Music can bring lightness to heavy times, and peace to chaotic times.
  • We sing songs of liberation and justice (and love and other fun stuff).
  • We’re a community that cares about each other and enjoys spending time together.
  • You will improve musically… and maybe in other ways too.
  • Orchid Pusey, our musical director since 2009 and Voices member for 22 years, shares generously of her amazing musical knowledge and talents (though she’s cringing as you read this!), and leads us with humor, kindness, wisdom, and a healthy dose of no-nonsense.

You should consider auditioning if you:

  • Can sing on key, read music (sight-reading not required), hold your own in tight four-part harmonies with no musical accompaniment, and take direction well. Don’t worry, we have learning tools to help you along the way.
  • Can commit to weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals in Oakland (7 – 9 pm).
  • Are a lover of justice who plays well with others.
  • Identify in some way with the term and/or history of “lesbian.” We have an expansive take on the term “lesbian” that includes bisexual, trans, and non-binary people. We use it to honor, not to limit.
